A walk in Brighton/Hove starting at 10.30 for a couple of hours or so of photography with the focus being the forthcoming PI set subject (City/Urban) and maybe stopping for a coffee along the way.
For those that want to stay on we can then head over to Brighton museum where there are around 100 images on display from the 59th Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition https://brightonmuseums.org.uk/event/wildlife-photographer-of-the-year/. Entrance to the exhibition is included with the museum entrance which costs £9.50 per year - no need to book you can just pay on the door. (The 60th Wildlife photographer of the year exhibition is now showing at the Natural History museum in London - 11 October 2024 to 29 June 2025 - so be warned if you saw the exhibition in London in 23/24 that you have probably already have seen the images now being shown in Brighton).
My suggested plan/route is:
- Meet in the gardens at Adelaide Crescent on Hove seafront (BN3 2JH) at 10.30. “Adelaide Crescent and the neighbouring Palmeira Square forms one of Hove's most important architectural set-pieces.... Building work started in 1830 to the design of Decimus Burton….. The crescent is one of the foremost pre-Victorian residential developments in the Brighton area: it has been claimed that "outside Bath, [they] have no superior in England". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelaide_Crescent.
- Having admired (and photographed) the Crescent I plan to walk east admiring further architectural delights including Brunswick Square.
- I then suggest crossing over to the seafront at the (Angel of) Peace statue and then continuing east stopping on the way to take the obligatory photograph of the west pier. Also near the West Pier is currently a small outdoor photography exhibition: J J Waller’s Lockdown (Informal portraits of this time). Then continue east to the Palace Pier
- From the Palace Pier walk down Madeira Drive and up the first set of steps and cross Marine Parade onto Lower Rock Gardens. Then turn left onto St James’s Street (Kemp Town) described by Ray Burn as one of the top 10 Brighton locations for street photography. https://www.burnimage.co.uk/brighton-street-photographers-guide/ (It was a bit quiet today)
- The Old Steine is at the end of St James’s street where you can catch the 700 bus back, head to the Wildlife photographer of the year exhibition or enjoy further photographic or retail delights of Brighton.
The total distance of the walk from Adelaide Crescent is around 3.5km. It took me 1.5 hours today so say 2-3 hours allowing for more stops/more photography. There are plenty of places to stop for coffee/lunch along the way.
Travel
- The 700 coastliner bus is possibly the easiest way - the nearest stop to Adelaide Crescent is Kings House just after the bus turns left off Hove seafront or you can stay on to Second Avenue and walk from there - either way its only about a 5 minutes walk. The 9.46 or 9.58 from Shoreham should get you there on time (traffic permitting).
- If you want to drive I am no expert on parking in Brighton! The King Alfred car park has been suggested. This is about 1km before Adelaide Crescent so a pleasant seafront walk. It costs £6.80 for 4 hours or £13.40 for more than 4 hours - payment by phone or app https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/parking/paid-parking/king-alfred-car-p…; However, at the end of the walk you will need to get the bus or walk back again.
- By train the nearest station is Hove which is about a 1 mile walk.
